Is MT799 itself an SBLC?
Learn why structured ancillary trade messaging should not be replaced casually by free format.
MT759 is an Ancillary Trade Structured Message for specified trade-finance information relating to undertakings. SWIFT directs users to use MT759 rather than MT799 when the MT759 scope applies.
MT799 is a Free Format Message for information where another message type is not applicable. It can carry narrative text but is not itself an LC, SBLC, guarantee or proof-of-funds instrument.
Many private procedures were written when parties used MT799 broadly for preliminary communication. SWIFT’s Category 7 restructuring introduced more structured messages for many purposes.
That does not mean every old “MT799 BPU” should be mechanically changed to MT759. The banks must decide what message is appropriate for the actual content and current standard.
