Is source of funds the same as account balance?
Understand why a bank asks where money came from and why a transaction exists.
Source of funds asks where the money used in the specific transaction comes from: operating revenue, sale proceeds, loan drawdown, investment proceeds or another identifiable source.
Source of wealth is broader. It asks how a person or owner accumulated their overall wealth, particularly in higher-risk private-banking or ownership situations.
A bank also wants the commercial story to make sense: who is buying what, why this instrument is needed, what contract supports it and how amounts relate to the customer’s business.
Contracts, invoices, financial statements, shipping information and facility documents can support the explanation, but the bank decides what it needs.
