Value Date, Cut-off, Charges and Settlement Finality

Why “sent today” does not always mean “available now.”

Value date

The accounting date on which funds are treated as effective can differ from the time a message is transmitted. Currency and market calendars matter.

Cut-off times

Payments released after a bank or clearing-system cut-off may move on the next processing day. Time zones and holidays add complexity.

Charges

Intermediary/correspondent charges can reduce the amount reaching the beneficiary depending on payment instructions and charging model.

Finality

A beneficiary seeing a provisional or pending credit is not always the same as irrevocable final settlement. This is especially important for drafts, cheques and fraud scenarios.

Standards / source note: Correspondent and reimbursement arrangements depend on bank agreements, current SWIFT standards and, where incorporated, ICC rules such as URR 725.
Remember this“Message sent,” “account credited,” “funds available,” and “settlement final” can be four different moments.
