MT799

MT799 is a Free Format Message. It is useful when another message type is not applicable, but it is not an LC, guarantee, standby or proof-of-funds product.

Current message choice

SWIFT guidance says MT759 should be used rather than MT799 when the MT759 scope applies. Banks should choose the current appropriate message for the content.

Market procedures

A private SOP that says “MT799 first” may reflect negotiated practice or old wording. It is not proof that SWIFT requires MT799 in that transaction.

Source / standards noteSWIFT standards evolve through standards releases. This page teaches message purpose and common concepts; banks should use the current official message specification for live traffic.
Remember thisStructured message when the scope fits; free format when another dedicated message does not apply.
