Why B/L is special
A bill of lading can function as receipt, evidence of contract of carriage and, in appropriate form, a document of title/control. Replacing paper therefore requires more than sending a scan.
Electronic control
Digital systems need a reliable method to identify the person in control and transfer that control without creating duplicate “originals.”
Legal recognition
Jurisdictions increasingly adopt frameworks recognising electronic transferable records, but coverage is not universal.
Bank acceptance
A bank can still decide which platforms, document types and legal frameworks it accepts for a transaction.
