Commercial Invoice Examination

Understand names, description, amount, currency and signature issues.

Who issues it

The commercial invoice is generally issued by the beneficiary unless the credit permits otherwise. Check the legal names against the credit.

Goods description

The invoice usually carries the most direct description of goods/services. Overly detailed LC wording can create avoidable mismatch risk.

Amount and currency

Check arithmetic, currency, tolerances and whether the invoice exceeds the amount available under the credit.

Signature requirements

Do not assume an invoice must be signed unless the credit/rules require it. Conversely, if the credit specifically asks for a signed invoice, provide one.

Standards / source note: For documentary-credit work, read the actual credit and amendments together with UCP 600 and the current ICC ISBP where applicable.
Remember thisA familiar-looking invoice can still be discrepant if the credit asks for something different.
